Benefits of Growing Vegetables in Your Garden

Thinking of planting vegetables at home for personal use and as a hobby? The idea of home vegetable gardening can appear overwhelming at first, but once you get the basics and do some research, you will see that it is not that complicated and very rewarding. Being able to grow your own vegetables can save you a lot of money, especially considering the economy of late.

Cost
Unfortunately, eating healthy usually costs more than eating junk. The cost of seeds and tools will save you in the long run as your crops deliver an abundance of fresh vegetables. Some people even choose to save seeds from vegetable plants they already have. Food just seems so much cooler when you put work into your home vegetable garden, watching them grow and ripen. You also have control over the quality of your vegetables.
Health
Knowing that I have worked hard and harvested a great crop would make me more excited to eat them and feed them to our family. We all have heard just how lacking fruits and vegetables are in our general diets. Vegetables are a great source of vitamins and minerals, especially when you eat a wide variety of them. Aim for a “rainbow” assortment of vegetables for maximum health benefits.
Growing vegetables is also a great low-impact form of exercise. Think of weeding, watering, tilling and harvesting. All that work will add up. You will likely need to lift some slightly heavy objects, such as topsoil.
Environment
Growing vegetables organically impacts the environment more positively than purchasing them. We also can’t forget about bruising, pesticides and other chemicals our vegetables are exposed to. Chemicals are hard on the environment, as well as the body, and can cause skin irritations or reactions when coming into contact with the chemicals. Planting vegetables also reduces the amount of produce bought, which requires gas to fuel the transport trucks. It may not seem like much help at the time, but your efforts will add up.

Just thinking about how wonderful they will taste and the satisfaction you will enjoy with the fruits of your labor are enough to inspire you to get started.
