There are basically three main types of vegetable plants that require planning in your vegetable garden design.

Root vegetables include beats carrots radishes.  Brassicas include cabbages sprouts and broccoli.  Legumes are podded vegetables that include peas and beans.  The onion family can have its own plot or be placed with the legumes.  Leeks are generally planted at a different time than other vegetable plants and can be placed anywhere that there is space for them.  Lettuces can be planted with roots or legumes.

Preparing the vegetable gardening plot:

Vegetables are very greedy, thus the soil needs to be well prepared and rich before you begin growing vegetables.  Rake over the soil well in the fall before you begin and lay a thick layer of manure or organic compost on top of the soil, forking over again in springtime.  Lastly, rake the raised bed vegetable garden in preparation for seeds and seedlings.

The plot for your vegetable garden design would optimally be facing south and open.  There should be terraces that can form raised bed gardening locations.  Each terrace can be level of using a rototiller, which can ensure that the seeds will not be washed away during the first rain of this season.  Clear the grounds of stones, weeds and debris.  Rake the soil to a fine tilth.  Place low walls or garden windows that are supported at regular intervals by timber posts.  Lay any desired paths with bark mulch to intersect the beds and provide a soft, firms surface.  This will allow easy access for tending your vegetable garden and harvesting the vegetable plants.  Place trellis panels over slope to banks to help climbers.  Hide your kitchen composter or compostumbler from view and begin planting vegetables in your beautiful vegetable garden design.
